The Johannesburg Festival for the Advancement of Music was established in 1974 by the Johannesburg branch of the SASMT and has grown to what it is today. It is an annual music festival held at the WITS education campus, Parktown, a central location that draws students from every suburb of Johannesburg and Pretoria.

We aim to give beginner, intermediate and advanced students a platform where they can perform their instrument in front of an audience and a specialist adjudicator. Thereby getting feedback in the form of a report and certificate, and a further overview discussion by the adjudicator at the end of each session. Every attempt is made by the organizing committee to engage with specialist adjudicators - thereby giving each participant the confidence that the report received is of the highest standard.

The various sections are piano / strings / woodwind / brass / harp / piano accordion / recorders / orchestras / choirs / vocals. The biggest section is obviously the piano, but we cater for all orchestral instruments and more.

The festival runs over a period of approximately two weeks - mainly afternoons and evenings. Weekends are also busy with the sound of music. We strive to keep the same annual time for the festival, i.e. end of July / beginning of August in order to be part of the greater music life happening in and around Johannesburg.
